# Liminal-space horror: definitions and strict-screen feature catalogue

## Scope and honesty about “every”

“Liminal horror” is a retrospective, porous family of effects rather than a formally bounded film genre. Critics differ over whether it means only empty transitional architecture or also ritual thresholds, impossible buildings, time loops, dream/death borders, identity instability, cosmic zones, simulations, institutional systems and absurd comedy. Obscure independent features also often lack dependable content information.

This is therefore the **broadest conservative feature-film catalogue I could substantiate through August 13, 2026**, not a claim that an unknowable worldwide total has been mathematically exhausted. It includes theatrical, streaming, direct-to-video and standalone television features. It excludes shorts, series episodes, unreleased films, and titles whose child-safety or nudity content could not be screened with adequate confidence.

A film qualifies only when liminality materially drives its setting, plot, structure or emotional effect. A conventional slasher does not qualify merely because one scene occurs in a hallway, motel or abandoned building.

## A systematic definition of liminal horror

**1. Anthropological liminality — transition without stable status.** From the Latin *limen*, “threshold.” In rites of passage, a person leaves one social identity, occupies a suspended “between” condition, then enters another. Horror blocks or corrupts that final transition, trapping someone between roles, communities, life stages or worlds.

**2. Architectural thresholds — spaces built to be crossed rather than inhabited.** Corridors, stairs, elevators, tunnels, bridges, roads, airports, stations, parking structures, waiting rooms, hotel passages and doorways become frightening when passage ceases to work.

**3. The modern non-place — anonymous transit, commerce and temporary occupancy.** Airports, hotels, motorways, supermarkets, offices, storage facilities, service stations and automated kiosks give people functions without durable belonging. Horror empties, repeats, seals or depersonalizes them.

**4. The uncanny familiar — ordinary space made subtly wrong.** A house, school, workplace, street or shop remains recognizable but feels alien because it is too vacant, too clean, wrongly proportioned, imperfectly repeated or occupied by a near-copy.

**5. Vacancy, ruins and hauntology — absence becomes active.** Closed resorts, obsolete technologies, abandoned institutions and depopulated towns imply missing inhabitants, erased futures and memories with no living owner. The unseen absence can be more frightening than a visible monster.

**6. Impossible and recursive architecture — geometry refuses the map.** Rooms move, corridors lengthen, exits return to entrances, interiors exceed exteriors and buildings alter when observed. Literary and visual ancestors include Gothic castles, Piranesi’s imaginary prisons, Kafka’s inaccessible systems, Borges’s labyrinths and libraries, *House of Leaves* and contemporary Backrooms fiction.

**7. Temporal liminality — caught between moments.** Loops, stopped time, repeated days, time slips, simultaneous timelines, delayed deaths and places outside chronology turn transition itself into imprisonment.

**8. Ontological liminality — uncertainty about what kind of reality or being exists.** A character may be suspended between waking and dream, life and death, original and copy, physical and virtual, human and monster, one universe and another, or story and world.

**9. Psychological and identity liminality — the self becomes a threshold.** Doubles, amnesia, possession, dissociation, transformation, unreliable perception and replicated consciousness make identity unstable and potentially inhabitable by something else.

**10. Social and institutional liminality — systems suspend ordinary personhood.** Hospitals, asylums, laboratories, prisons, offices, schools, military sites, care facilities and bureaucracies process people through rules they cannot fully see or contest. Institutional procedure becomes the monster.

**11. Folkloric boundary horror — crossings traditionally guarded by ritual.** Crossroads, gates, bridges, caves, forests, wells, shorelines, village edges, dusk, midnight and seasonal turning points are culturally associated with spirits, the dead and the Otherworld. Threshold guardians, taboos, tolls and offerings regulate who may pass.

**12. Ecological and cosmic liminality — beyond habitable human order.** Deep oceans, polar stations, deserts, alien planets, quarantine zones, derelict spacecraft and anomalous landscapes occupy the border between mapped civilization and environments indifferent to human categories.

**13. Digital, gamic and media liminality — crossing through representation.** Simulations, games, recordings, broadcasts, CCTV, obsolete media, livestreams and dead websites open passages between mediated and physical reality. “No-clipping” and the Backrooms turned imperfect digital architecture into a distinct popular horror language.

**14. Narrative, theatrical and metafictional liminality — fiction stops staying fictional.** Rehearsal becomes murder, a film set becomes its movie, storytelling changes the room, viewers enter the work and characters discover that they are being recorded, authored or watched.

**15. Bodily liminality — the body between categories.** Infection, mutation, cloning, parasitism, transplantation and technological embodiment destabilize the border between self and environment. This counts when the transformation is inseparable from the film’s enclosed or threshold world, not merely because a movie contains gore.

**16. Tonal liminality — terror can be solemn, melancholy, surreal or funny.** Liminal horror includes Gothic dread, severe scare-driven horror, quiet vacancy, cosmic awe, experimental abstraction, satire and outright horror-comedy. Kafkaesque systems are often frightening and ridiculous at once; comedy does not cancel the threshold mechanism.

## Content-screen rules and symbols

**No children in peril** is applied strictly: no minor or infant knowingly threatened, hunted, abducted, confined, abused, injured or killed, and no prominent child-victim backstory. A safe child appearing incidentally in a photograph, conversation or background is not automatically disqualifying. Pregnancy alone is not treated as a child character; an endangered newborn or infant is. Characters presented as college-age adults are treated as adults unless the film establishes otherwise.

**No graphic nudity** excludes visible genitals, prolonged explicit full-frontal nudity, strongly sexualized explicit nudity, and graphic nude-corpse or genital-injury imagery. It does **not** automatically exclude all adult sexuality, brief breasts or buttocks, obscured nudity or nonsexual rear nudity.

- **†** Brief, obscured, rear or otherwise non-graphic adult nudity, or notable consensual sexual material. Remove every † title for a zero-nudity list.
- **⚠** Adult sexual assault, coercion or substantial sexual violence, without disqualifying graphic nudity.
- **◇** Horror-comedy, unusually surreal or experimental work, or a horror-adjacent boundary case retained because the liminal mechanism is central.

YouTube links are limited to full-film uploads identified as public-domain, filmmaker/distributor-posted or otherwise plausibly authorized. Availability changes. Every other entry links to an Amazon Video search; that is a discovery link, not a promise that the title is presently rentable, purchasable or included with Prime in every country.

## Why several famous “obvious” titles are absent

- **The Shining, Skinamarink, Vivarium, The Langoliers, Silent Hill, 1408 and The Incident** — a child is endangered, harmed, confined, hunted or central to the threat.
- **Backrooms (2026)** — childhood flashbacks place a confined child under an unstable parent's control.
- **NoClip 2** — a toddler appears in an unsafe drug-exposure scene, so the sequel fails the strict child screen even though the first and third films qualify.
- **The Lighthouse, Event Horizon, Midsommar, Men, Infinity Pool and The Substance** — disqualifying explicit or graphic nudity, sexualized nude imagery or genital imagery.
- **The Vast of Night** — one lead is a minor and the testimony includes endangered or abducted infants, despite the film's powerful nocturnal non-place atmosphere.
